The White Shark Trust Field Research Assistantship is proud to introduce you to our assistants:

Michael UNWIN from Watford (United Kingdom), Jessica da Silva from Toronto (Canada) and Andrew BLAKE from Newport (Wales, UK).

May 2003 started

with a New Record!

Up until recently, my record for the number of sharks observed in one day stood at 18 different White Sharks.. this record stood for nearly four years.

Ten days ago, while deploying satellite tags, we observed 23 sharks!

Today, Thursday the 1st of May 2003, we observed a staggering 27 different White Sharks in less than five hours!

We had as many as four sharks swimming around the boat at times... and it got very confusing as you may imagine...

We also observed one of the largest shark seen at Dyer Island so far: a 5 meter female!

At the end of the day, Jessica, Andrew and MichaelU joined the Shark Diving Unlimited team to try to get a White Shark to breach... well it was successful as you can see above!

What a Day!

On Friday, 2nd of May, we went to Cape Town as MichaelS had some meetings at the University of Cape Town.

Jessica, MichaelU and Andrew walked around the V&A Waterfront... and went for the movie opening of "X-Men 2". We met again afterwards, had a Pizza and drove back to Gansbaai...

On Saturday, 3rd of May, we went out to sea in the morning... but the sky looked grey and menacing... soon after we anchored, fog surrounded us and rain started pouring down heavily. We decided to return to land.

The next few days, the sea was rough and we couldn't go to sea...

On Wednesday the 7th of May 2003, we managed to go out to sea again after following some windy and rainy days...

We observed 12 different White Sharks in the early hours of the morning, and then later during the morning, no much action anymore.

Among those 12 sharks, we observed one shark with a satellite PAT tag...

The evening of the 7th of May, we celebrated MichaelS's Birthday... The weather had been great that day and sitting around a fire, we enjoyed a delicious meal prepared by Tracey and her mother. Very nice and relaxing evening among friends!
