The White Shark Trust Field Research Assistantship is proud to introduce you to our assistants:

Justin HUBBEL (Anaheim, California, USA) and Ronald NEALY (Freeport, Florida, USA) have been with us since the 1st of April.

On the 1st of May 2005, we welcomed

Anna BATTESE from St-Fadden, Australia

Adam PHILLIPS from Redditch, United Kingdom

Our friend Chris MILNES (Grantham, Lincolnshire, England), one of our old assistants from 2003 and 2004, has also come back to visit and is also volunteering for the White Shark Trust as a guest.

Following a few days of bad weather and heavy seas, we returned to sea on Tuesday the 3rd of May 2005 with our new group of assistants... In the morning, we discovered that someone had broken into our boat and stolen a few items. But fortunatelly really not much of the full potential damage - must have been South Africa's Dumbest (or Most Conscientious?) Criminals...
So we launched Lamnidae in the afternoon after filing a police report and replacing the stolen safety equipment... Overcast day... but glassy flat ocean and just a very light breeze... Great day to start the month! We observed thirteen different White Sharks in three hours, among which a 450 cm long Big Fat Mamma!
On Thursday the 5th of May 2005, the forecasted weather looked bad with a series of winter storms hitting the Western Cape, and we were thus invited on board the much larger Barracuda vessel (Shark Diving Unlimited) to be safe... But the strong winds and heavy seas only started in the afternoon... Beautiful morning on the ocean...
We observed twelve different White Sharks today... One available space was left in the Shark cage... and Anna did not hesitate to put a wetsuit on and jump into the cage... Next time, it will be Adam's chance to admire the Sharks underwater.
