The White Shark Trust Field Research Assistantship is proud to introduce you to our assistants:

Edward FARRELL (Dublin, Ireland) and Barney DUNLOP (Bath, England)

Timo SECKLER (Ellenberg, Germany) has been our assistant since the 15th of July 2005. He assisted with the manual telemetry tracking of White Sharks in Mossel Bay during the month of August.

Andy Brandy CASAGRANDE IV has been our assistant, guest and especially friend since September 2003, and he has been living in Gansbaai and assisting the White Shark Trust during most of 2004 and now again in 2005.

The weather looked perfect on Thursday the 15th of December 2005... The ocean looked flat and calm... A winter storm is forecasted to hit the Western Cape by Friday... Should we go out one last time with Barney and Ed before they leave? Yes, but we just wanted to go along the Haibaai beach to look at the White Sharks inshore... no chum... no bait...
Well, the weather was indeed wonderful... but what the images on this page do not show well (due to the use of wide angle lenses), is the swell rolling into the bay... And as we were idling alongside a four meter White Shark near the beach, the skipper (me) misjudged one of the upcoming swell... and Lamnidae surfed a massive breaking wave towards the beach. The Shark just saw us take off alongside, and she breaked and probably watched this boat surfing... wondering if this was a new surf board of some type.

Anyway, although, Lamnidae was full of water, Timo swung from the tower in a weird angle, Barney held onto one of the engines, and every guy on the boat screamed like a girl, we made it! But it was scary... Nearly lost Lamnidae on the last day of the assistantship...

In the evening of Thursday the 15th, Wilfred Chivell, owner of Marine Dynamics (White Shark cage diving company) and Dyer Island Cruises (Whale watching company), had a Christmas Party for all the staff and crew of both companies. Great evening, delicious food and a wonderful opportunity to meet everyone.
