The White Shark Trust Field Research Assistantship is proud to introduce you to our assistants:
Edward FARRELL (Dublin, Ireland), Clova JURK (Perth, Scotland), and Sarah BAHAN (Idaho, USA)
Timo SECKLER (Ellenberg, Germany) has been our assistant since the 15th of July 2005. He assisted with the manual telemetry tracking of White Sharks in Mossel Bay during the month of August.
Andy Brandy CASAGRANDE IV has been our assistant, guest and especially friend since September 2003, and he has been living in Gansbaai and assisting the White Shark Trust during most of 2004 and now again in 2005.
On Friday the 11th of November, the wind finally died and we managed to launch Lamnidae. The water was crystal clear, and it was a beautiful but overcast day at sea, but unfortunately, the Sharks were few and lazy. We observed three Sharks for a very short time... We then decided to do a shore transect to see if the Sharks were at the beach, and re-anchor elsewhere...
Unfortunately, half-way through our shore transect, one of our outboard engines stoped working and we had to return to shore... The mechanics could then only come on Monday. And although the weekend was overcast and loomed with coming rain, the ocean was flat for a change... Bad luck!
On Saturday the 12th of November, one of our old assistants, Nick Pade came for a visit to Gansbaai with his colleague Chryssoula Gubili. They are both conducting their PhDs at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland, Nick on Porbeagle and Chryssoula on White Shark genetic population studies. They came to South Africa to collect some tissue samples and network with local scientists for collaboration.
On Saturday the 12th of November, stuck on shore due to engine problems, Dyer Island Cruises welcomed Ed and Timo on board Whale Whisperer for a Whale watching trip and a visit to Dyer Island, where the bull Seals are now actively seducing females.
Saturday evening, we drove to Hermanus to forget about the broken engine and party with our friend Nick! We had a great meal at the Ocean Basket, unfortunately, Timo was suffering not eating any fish... We then went to the Gecko Bar...
Rain... Thunder... Wind... Storm... What can one do on such a day other than watch 12 episodes of the TV series 24 Season Two (they had watched Season One last week)? The only problem was that it was not really raining, just drizling at times, and there was no wind or thunder, just a broken engine... And Clova, Ed and Sarah have become addicts...
